By Free Famous Food Writer
As always we love to keep our Food Lovers well informed about the Food Events around the city. Free Famous Food was invited for an interesting event recently. Maria Goretti’s Debut Cookbook launch event was held on Friday, February 19th 2016 from 4pm -7pm at Myra’s @ Fort Canning restaurant. This event was presented by India Se Literary Salon.
Maria Goretti has been a very popular MTV VJ in the 1990s in India and is now a passionate cook. She has just launched an independent food show this month on one of the Indian food channels. Previously she was co-hosting a cookery show on a leading TV channel. She has been contributing her recipes regularly for few leading magazines and publications in India. She is married to well-known Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi.
From My Kitchen To Yours: Food, Love And Other Ingredients, her debut cookbook celebrates how Maria Goretti lives her life, with memorable recipes from her mother’s East-Indian spreads, aromas from her grandmother s kitchen, and the food that she has seen, touched and tasted over her many travels across India, and the world, as a VJ with MTV. Add to that, all those delicious dishes she has eaten at her friend’s homes, especially those sinful desserts that she loved, which she tried and tried till she got them right. Divided into monthly menus with soups, salads, starters, non-vegetarian and vegetarian main course dishes, and desserts, the recipes are simple and delicious.
During her cooking demo, Maria demonstrated her favourite recipe from her book with the audience present. She baked a gluten free Orange cake with chocolate chips. Interestingly there is no butter in this recipe. The cake was made using fresh oranges including the orange peel. Maria scrap out the white layer of the peel so that the cake doesn’t taste bitter. Another unique element about the ingredient was the use of Almond flour. Maria used almond flour which was a unique technique of baking. The ingredients of the cake consist of whole fresh oranges, baking powder, baking soda, eggs, chocolate chips, sugar and cinnamon powder. Maria added that the orange peels adds moist to the cake. Once the batter was ready, it was baked for 55 minutes under the temperature of 170C.
While the cake was being baked in the oven, Maria Goretti’s book was unveiled by Chief Guest, Sarab Kapoor, Singapore’s Well-known Culinary Expert. The vibrant looking book was purchased by many fans and guests. It was also autographed by Maria with mandatory selfies of course. Reasonably priced at $30 per book had overwhelming response to the bool sales and Maria was delighted. Some eagerly browsed thru the book and were all ready to start their kitchen mission with Maria’s recipes.
It was an eventful day for food lovers to interact with each other to broaden their horizons and learn the art of cooking. Before the event came to an end, everyone was served with the delicious cake baked by Maria.
